News from Iquitos

(NOTE: The photograph above was borrowed from another site so you can see what these little animals are like. As soon as Gudrun sends photos, we will upload them, of course. )

Coatimundis live in a wide variety of terrain, such as the lowland rainforests, river woodlands, bushy and rocky terrain, though they are usually found in heavily forested areas. They range from the southwestern United States to Argentina and Uruguay. The coatimundi is generally brownish in color, ranging from cinnamon to chocolate brown. Their legs and muzzle are darker colored, and their underbelly, cheeks and around the eyes are pale cream to white. They have faint rings on their tail. Their fur is generally short and course, with slightly longer hairs on the body. Coatis have a long slender head with a flexible snout. Their ears are short and rounded. Their legs are short yet powerful. Their ankles can reverse completely so they can climb down a tree backwards.

Everybody is fine.

Since Wednesday we have another orphan — a very little "Achuni," a South American coati. The scientific name is "Nasua Nasua" and in German they call it "Nosebear."

It is at the most two weeks old, and I'm not sure if it will survive. It only weighs 150gr. and takes a bit of milk (not even babyfood), and it still has diarrea. If we can get it to eat, there is hope.

The little newcomer is recovering very well — she already almost doubled her weight. I took her to the vet who gave her "suero" into the vein. Then the vet told me to feed her meat, but she didn't like it at all. Anyway, she is so young, she wouldn't eat anything else than her mother's milk, so I just bought some babymilk for human silblings and she likes it, and it does her good. We leave her for some hours each day in a big cage with natural floor where she can look for worms.

I'll make some pictures in the next days and I'll send them for the web site.

I hope all of you are fine and I want to thank you again for everything you're doing for us.

Best wishes,
Gudrun
